SOLE in 4J
Teacher: Mrs Mandow
4J is a stage 2 remedial class consisting of 20 students.
Students within this class have had no previous experience with SOLE tasks.
Students in 4J thoroughly enjoy using computers and iPads for investigation
and research, along with enjoyment, which will be beneficial during our SOLE
session. 4J felt very privilege to have been chosen to take part in the
SOLE Project for 2014. 4J's experience with SOLE started a little rocky.
We experienced a few technical issues when trying to log onto
the iPads to research. However after 3 SOLE
sessions our interest into the questions that were being posed began to peak.

SOLE Session 1- Can you kill a goat by staring at it?
I started the session off by explaining what SOLE was and what it involved. I also went through the roles that each person would take on during our SOLE session:
Police officer - Manages the group and makes sure they are on task.
Materials manager - Collects materials at the beginning of the lesson and returns them at the end.
Scribe - Write down everyone's ideas and what they have found out.
Computer monitor - Only person allowed to use the computer.
Introducing the very first questions: 4J students burst into laughter when I posed this question and the immediate response was 'NO!'. However was they began their investigation they seemed to be changing their minds.
'Ms the army used to hypnotise the goats! Maybe then they killed them because the goats had no control.' Ricarldo
There was some trouble between groups as they could not agree on an answer to the question. The police officer of one group stepped in and handled the situation pretty well..'Guys we can say yes and no, all we need is to have good reasons to tell people so they believe us.' Yahia

The girls were more then happy to report back to the class on their findings. 'No! You cannot kill a goat by staring at it, it's all just lies that was made up for a book and a movie and because George Clooney was in the movie everyone believes it's true!'
SOLE Session 2- Do fish feel pain?
4J thought I was asking them another silly question!! Until they started researching! Yahia- WOW! Fish do feel pain, not like humans, but they do! Their brain isn't has big as ours so that's why the way they feel pain is different from us.

SOLE Session 3- Do boys think differently to girls?
This question sure did create discussions within our class. The girls went for a more scientific approach, while they boys chose to answer the question using their life experiences. The girls found that females tend to use more of the white matter in the brains and boys use the grey matter in their brains and that's why the girls decided YES! Boys do think differently to girls.
However, the boys had a different reasoning for their answer.. Ricarldo- We think they boys think differently to girls because boys go out and get the money and the girl stays home and takes care of the family. She has to cook, clean and take care of the kids and the boy works and mows the lawn and does all the garden stuff. The girls in 4J could not disagree more! Teagan- WHAT!? Look at Mrs Mandow, she's a girl and she works and makes money. Does that mean she's a boy?

SOLE Session 4- How can we protect our beaches from sharks?
This weeks SOLE session saw all the classes involved within the project come together. We combined our classes and made sure that each class was represented in each group. This week SOLE was a little different as the students were asked to take on a particular perspective on the topic. There were 7 viewpoint: Surfer, Swimmer, Resident, Tourist, Environmentalist, Life Guard and Local Fisherman.
There were a few hiccups that occurred with the grouping of the students and the internet access on the iPads, however us teachers seemed more frazzled then the kids! I thought there would be more conflict between the students, but they all got along very well and came up with some really good solutions. One even if stopped and thought 'what about the sharks, shouldn't we be protected them? The beach is their natural habitat.'

How can we make our playground fun and engaging?
WOW! This question was a hit with 4J! They came up with some really awesome ideas- some alittle to abstract, but overall I was really impressed. We had ideas ranging from a Skateboard park to reading nooks.
Here are the ideas 4J came up with!
